The End of Childhood
Mustarintanen, Finland
“The times have changed—”
I raise the quill hesitantly.
It is dusk. The light from the oil lamp barely touches the worn surface of the desk. A single, meaningless sentence stares up at me from the expensive parchment, defiant and unrepentant.
Many consider it a miracle—or witchcraft—that these ugly curls of ink become words that make sense.
The parchment1 is old. Thin leather, already used at least once before. The ghost of a previous text still bleeds through, despite my best efforts to scrape it clean. There are plenty of blank sheets in the chest—gifts, most of them—but using one for this feels as foolish as wearing a silk cloak to shovel manure.
I’ve seen papyrus, made from pressed leaves. I’ve seen fine, fibrous sheets—sieved and pressed, thinner than parchment, meant for a single use. But I wasn’t allowed to bring any of that with me. People here aren’t ready for such things.
Anything new is immediately branded evil.
There’s no use wasting time on the prejudiced. They don’t listen. They don’t want to. They’re driven by fear and hate, by envy and greed.
And there are far too many of them. Especially in these remote forests.
Besides, I am a woman.
That’s why I hold this quill in the dead of night, hidden from view. I am assumed to be without intellect or will of my own—so how could I possibly be capable of something as demanding as reading or writing?
Still, I dare to disagree. Quietly. When no one is around to hear.
