Finnish author M. R. Malkki writes stories and constructs worlds by following interesting questions several steps beyond the point where a sensible person would have stopped.

This is largely how Alinen happened.

Her working life has wandered through entrepreneurship, guiding, tourism, hospitality, crafts and practical trades.

She has also, quite literally, worked at the National Archives of Finland.

A national archive. An actual one.

This may or may not explain what followed.

There is no particularly elegant academic career connecting all these things.

That may be the point.

If you spend your life moving between different rooms, eventually you begin to notice the doors between them.
